Organic New Year’s Resolutions for 2016

With 2015 coming to a close, it’s time to think about how to transform our lives for the upcoming year. This was an exciting year for organic research, with multiple cutting-edge studies revealing scientific breakthroughs on the environmental and human health benefits of organic food and farming. We’ve put together ten New Year’s Resolutions based on these findings to reflect ways that you can put science into action.

    Improve your health by avoiding pesticide residues on food
This year, research clearly showed that small pesticide residues on food can have an impact on your health. While decades worth of research has demonstrated the clear dangers of exposure to pesticides through application or living in agricultural areas, few studies have looked at the health consequences of exposure to low-level pesticide residues in a conventional diet. In 2015, however, researchers at Harvard University published a study showing that dietary exposure to pesticides can lower sperm quantity and quality in men. After taking into account confounding factors such as weight and smoking, researchers found that men exposed to the highest levels of pesticide residue through fruit and vegetable consumption had almost 50% fewer sperm and more abnormally shaped sperm when compared to men who consumed the least amount of pesticides. Jorge Chavarro, the study’s senior author, pointed out that the findings suggest that “implementing strategies specifically targeted at avoiding pesticide residues, such as consuming organically grown produce or avoiding produce known to have large amounts of residues, may be the way to go.” The best way to avoid pesticide residues on food is by eating an organic diet, which brings us to our second New Year’s Resolution…
  1. Eat an organic diet to reduce your exposure to pesticides
More research came out in 2015 showing that eating an organic diet can reduce your exposure to pesticides.One large-scale study looked at 4,000 participants from major U.S. cities and confirmed that choosing organic does, in fact, reduce consumer exposure to pesticides. Another study focusing on children’s exposure to pesticides showed that eating an organic diet reduces the exposure to some pesticides in young children. “In general, an organic diet was associated with lower levels of frequently detected metabolites for all children,” the paper concluded.  While these results aren’t surprising, they do support the efficacy of organic standards for protecting the public against pesticide exposure. This is especially important given the number of studies in 2015 that demonstrated negative health consequences of pesticide exposure.
  1. Watch out for Roundup!

Glyphosate, the active ingredient in the pesticide Roundup, has long been touted as a pesticide that poses few risks to humans. One of the most commonly used herbicides in the world, it is found in over 750 different products used on farms and in urban areas. Unfortunately, new groundbreaking research suggests that it might not be as benign as previously thought. One study from 2015 suggested that low-level exposure to Roundup over a long period of time could cause kidney and liver damage in rats. The doses used in the study were low enough that it prompted the researchers to note, “As the dose of Roundup we investigated is environmentally relevant in terms of human, domesticated animals and wildlife levels of exposure, our results potentially have significant health implications for animal and human populations.” Similar research results were cited in a recent studypublished by the World Health Organization (WHO), which determined that exposure to glyphosate “probably” causes cancer in humans. The WHO working group assigned the risk level as “probably carcinogenic to humans” after reviewing results from pertinent scientific literature showing evidence that glyphosate exposure is linked to certain cancers in humans, induces tumors in mice, damages human DNA, and disrupts beneficial intestinal microbes in humans.
  1. Make sure your children stay pesticide-free
Several 2015 studies investigated the health effects of pesticide exposure specifically in children. One recent study showed an association between early exposure to organophosphate pesticides and respiratory symptoms consistent with possible childhood asthma. Unfortunately, it’s not only children’s physical health that can be affected by pesticide exposure. Another  2015 study linked pesticide exposure and decreased mental ability, including neurocognitive abilities, in children. Yet another study linked pesticide exposures during child development to ADHD symptoms. It is especially critical for children to avoid pesticides as they can linger in children’s bodies longer than adults because their metabolism is different from adults. Additionally, children’s immune systems are still developing, so toxins can have a disproportionate adverse effect on them.

    Help promote bee health
Human health wasn’t the only area with research in 2015 showing the dangers of pesticides. Several studies showed that the class of pesticides called neonicotinoids (“neonics”) has a broad range of negative impacts on bees. One study found that even exposure to very low levels of neonics can negatively affect bees. Another study looking at five years of data on pesticide usage and over 11 years of bee health observations found a correlation between increased use of neonics and honey bee losses. Yet another found that even when neonics aren’t sprayed directly on fields, they can impact bee health. These new findings on the negative effects of neonics on bee health were combined with previous years’ findings in the 2015 report released by theEuropean Food Safety Authority (EFSA), which deemed neonics a high risk to bees. This is especially the case given the bizarre finding of a 2015 study that despite the poisonous effects of neonics. bees actually prefer neonicotinoid-laced food. The researchers showed that bees can get addicted to neonicotinoid pollen, suggesting that the pesticide could have similar addictive affects to nicotine, driving bees to consume more of the pesticide-contaminated food than normal.   1. Dig in with improved soil quality
Organic is also beneficial to soil health, according to several studies released in 2015. Specifically, scientists made breakthroughs looking into organisms living in the soil. Findings published from a long-term studyincorporating over a decade-worth of data show organic farming is beneficial for soil organisms, with larger soil animals increasing to over 250 times that of conventional soils, and microorganisms increasing 70%. Still another study showed that, in addition to increased soil biodiversity, organic management improves nutrient availability and soil structure.     Clean up our water supply
This resolution focuses on the multiple benefits organic has in preventing runoff into our waterways. One of the essential findings published in 2015 looked at nitrogen runoff from organic and conventional farms. Researchers found that organic cropping systems have less nitrogen pollution than conventional cropping systems.Another study released by USDA researchers in the Midwest looked at water quality, and found organic farming methods can be used to reduce water pollution in U.S waterways. This showed nitrate loss via water in the conventional cropping systems was twice as high as nitrate loss from the organic cropping system. The Organic Center is working on a project to put these benefits of reduced nitrogen pollution into context by developing a nitrogen footprint calculator that will allow individuals to examine their specific nitrogen contributions based on personal consumption patterns. Check back in early 2016 for our roll-out of the calculator.
  1. Support farmers by choosing organic
Organic products are better at supporting farmers financially, according to a 2015 study published in theProceedings of the National Academy of the Sciences. Researchers used over 40 previously published articles encompassing 55 different crops across 14 countries, and found that organic farming is more profitable to farmers than conventional farming. Their results show that organic is 22 -35% more profitable than conventional farming. The researchers point out that benefits to farmers are probably even greater than their estimates, because this analysis does not include the environmental and health benefits of organic. “If we also put a price on the negative externalities caused by farming, such as soil erosion or nitrate leaching into groundwater, then organic agriculture would become even more profitable because its environmental footprint has been shown to be less than that of conventional agriculture,” they wrote..
  1. Make biodiversity a priority

In addition to supporting soil and pollinator diversity, organic farming has been shown to promote a wide diversity of organisms on the farm. Often times the biological services performed from increased biodiversity can have real-world economic benefits for farmers as well. For example, one study that came out in 2015 showed that organically farmed lands had more beneficial predatory insects and spiders than conventional farms. Not only did they find that these beneficial insects could control on-farm pests, the impact of these benefits reached beyond the organic farms, even improving adjacent forest patches. Another study confirmed the extended reach of organic benefits beyond the farm, showing that the presence of organic farms alsoincreases the amount of biodiversity on surrounding conventional farms.
  1. Help mitigate climate change
Agriculture accounts for 35% of greenhouse gas emissions worldwide, but a groundbreaking study released in 2015 showed that you can help mitigate climate change by choosing organic. Specifically, the study found that organic farming methods could mitigate climate change by sequestering carbon in the soil and decreasing greenhouse gas emissions. Researchers found that practices such as replacing chemical fertilizers with organic manure and using crop residues as forage for cattle significantly reduced greenhouse gas emissions and increased storage of carbon in the soils. “Solely utilizing chemical fertilizer on the farmland not only led to increased greenhouse gas emissions, but also deteriorated the quality of the soil,” they reported.

Organic agriculture as a solution to climate change

We’ve all heard about the effects that climate change is having on our Earth: hotter temperatures, sea level rises that threaten to gobble up our coast lines, and more severe weather events including droughts and flooding. The consequences are dire, but what can we as individuals do to remedy the situation? Should we give up our cars or vow to never set foot on a plane again? Luckily, combating climate change can be as simple as supporting organic agriculture. Numerous studies have demonstrated how switching from conventional to organic farming methods can decrease the amount of carbon in the atmosphere, and reduce greenhouse gas emissions and energy usage all while increasing our food security.

One of the primary ways in which humans contribute to global warming is by releasing the greenhouse gas carbon dioxide (CO2) into the atmosphere by burning fossil fuels such as gas or oil. For example, every time we drive our cars, we release CO2 into the atmosphere. As the amount of COin the atmosphere increases, so will the severity of climate change. One way to reduce atmospheric CO2 and combat global warming is by transferring the carbon from the atmosphere onto the Earth’s surface. Soil contains more carbon than all of the air and forests in the world, and it also happens to be one of the easiest places to deposit carbon from greenhouse gasses.

According to a study published in the journalScience, we could remove up to 78 Gt (78,000,000,000 tons) of carbon from the atmosphere simply by rejuvenating soils that have been depleted of carbon by conventional farming methods. That’s enough to offset up to 15% of the entire world’s fossil fuel emissions. A study published in theProceedings of the National Academy of the Sciences, determined that organic farming is an effective way to simultaneously restore carbon to our soils and reduce carbon in the atmosphere. Furthermore, a 30-year study comparing organic and conventional farming methods conducted by the Rodale Institute found that soils farmed using organic methods were healthier and continued to experience an increase in carbon-based organic matter over time. On the other hand, soils farmed using conventional methods saw reductions in soil carbon and nutrients.

Organic agriculture also leaves a much smaller environmental footprint than conventional agriculture. Research published in Current Agriculture Research Journal and by the Rodale Institute found that organic farming methods release significantly fewer greenhouse gasses and use less energy than conventional farming methods. Conventional farming relies heavily on the use of chemical fertilizers, herbicides, and pesticides. The synthesis, transport and application of these chemicals are very energy intensive. The Farm System Trials by the Rodale Institute found a 45% increase in energy use with conventional farming methods when compared to organic methods. Greenhouse gas emissions were 40% lower in organic farm systems than in conventional farming systems due to a combination of reduced need for fossil fuels and lower N2O emissions.
Have you ever noticed that during some years, produce is more expensive than it is in other years? Oftentimes this is because bad weather has destroyed crops, leading to a lower yield and forcing farmers to charge you more to make up for their losses. Climate change is ushering in a new era of climate extremes including severe droughts and heavy rains. According to the United States Global Change Research Project,farmers are already experiencing a decline in agricultural yields due to extreme weather events.

In a study comparing organic and conventional systems researchers found that organic farmlands performed better during droughts by capturing and storing water more efficiently than conventional farms. These same fields also outperformed the conventionally farmed fields during heavy rainstorms because they experienced less runoff and erosion. In a world where a more volatile climate is becoming the norm, organic agriculture is more resilient, ensuring greater food security than conventional agriculture. As Steve Hoffman from Compass Natural and Regeneration International says in his blog Organic, Regenerative Agriculture a Low-Cost Solution to Climate Change,“It seems like a powerful solution to climate change lies literally right under our feet.”
